Come and join us at St Augustine's, Whitton

![]() We belong to the Church of England and welcome people from all denominations and those who are not sure what they believe but are trying to explore their faith. Whitton is part of Twickenham in the Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames in south west London, England. It is in the former county of Middlesex which was disbanded in 1965 but many local people still regard themselves as living in Middlesex. St Augustine's Church stands at the junction of Hospital Bridge Road and the A316, the Great Chertsey Road. It is a major arterial road which connects the M3 Motorway at Sunbury to the A4, the Bath Road at Hogarth Roundabout in Chiswick and into central London. Surprisingly, traffic noise is rarely heard inside the church or vicarage. The Church was opened in 1958 following fund raising by worshippers and parents of children at St Augustine's Mission Church and Bishop Perrin School, a Church of England Primary School, which had been opened as a church and school in 1935/6. Until that time, when most of the housing in Whitton was built, the local area mostly consisted of market gardens supplying some of the needs of the population of London by train and lorry. Most of our worshippers attend the 10.00 a.m. service on Sunday mornings, with crèche and activities for children aged 0-5 in the narthex and junior church in the church hall. A family service is normally held at 10.00 a.m. on the 3rd Sunday in the month when rainbow guides, brownies and guides parade their colours and banners and take an active part in the service undertaking the Reading and the Gospel and leading the prayers as intercessors. Junior church is not held on these Sundays. People of all ages attend our services, parents with children and babies being very welcome. A Sunday Matinee service, which is very popular with primary school children and their parents is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoons at 4.00 p.m. Evening Prayer takes place at 6.30 pm. most Sundays. Come along and join us on Sunday morning for the 10.00 a.m. service. Tell the people handing out the service sheets that you are new to St Augustine's and ask to be introduced to one or two other people and go into the church hall after the service. Many members of the congregation go for a cuppa after the 10.00 a.m. service on Sundays and talk to friends and newcomers as this an important outreach time. Homelink Day Respite Care takes place in the church hall on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Plans to extend Homelink to include Tuesdays are currently being investigated as the hall has recently become available during the day after both the morning Childminders Group and afternoon Mothers and Toddlers Group closed. St Augustine's does not have any traditional men's or women's social groups such as The Church of England Men's Society or Mothers' Union meeting during the day on Monday - Friday. The Young Wive's Group, formed in the 1960s, evolved into the Thursday Club which also welcomed husbands and met fortnightly on Thursday evenings until July 2006 when it was closed. The CTiW group meets at each of the local churches for ecumenical services and social events. On Good Friday each year, about 200 church members of all ages from the CTiW churches hold a Walk of Witness either to or from Montrose Green through Whitton High Street; in the last 2 years the walk has been to St Philip & St James Church followed by a short service and social. In previous years the walk started at St Edmund's Church and Whitton Baptist Church. Apart from rainbow guides, brownies and guides which meet on Friday evenings in the Church hall, youth groups are not currently run for non-church members but the PCC plans to run the groups in the future. There are 3 homegroups meeting fortnightly at members' houses. They follow a series of courses designed to help group members understand and deepen their faith in Christianity and learn about other faiths and traditions. The Church has a large choir of young girl and boy choristers and adults, both men and women, which meet for junior and adult choir practice on Friday evenings. A full complement of servers of all ages from young boat bearers and acolytes onwards assist the clergy at services although incense is normally reserved for special occasions. There are many new groups that have been set up during the last ten years with an emphasis on 'Pastoral Care' :- The Emmaus Group meets during the sermon on Sunday except in the Family Service once a month. It gives people of secondary school age an opportunity to discuss their Christian way of life and support each other through life's ups and downs. The Friday Group meets fortnightly in the narthex at the back of the church. Topics for discussion are set in advance with one of the group members nominated to lead the conversation. Volunteers are asked to lead meetings which are very enjoyable whilst educational. Mothers with young babies and pre-school age children often attend. The Dorcas Group meets on Wednesdays to design, make and repair church banners, altar linen, vestments and other similar items. The Men's Discussion group meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday evening in the Nelson and on the 2nd Friday at lunchtime during even months at local pubs to talk about a wide range of subjects on an informal basis. The Mixed Discussion Group meets every week on Wednesday evening at Whitton Community Centre and on the 2nd Friday during odd months at local pubs and restaurants. There is no agenda but somehow the conversation manages to keep going over a drink and, perhaps a meal. Children are very welcome to come along with their parents to the Sunday lunchtime meetings at the community centre, normally at very short notice after a cuppa following the 10.00 a.m. service. The group also meets in the Winning Post at lunchtimes and evenings to support Jazz events which raise funds for the Shooting Star Children's Hospice. A Women's Discussion Group does not yet exist. Our last vicar indicated that anybody interested in joining the group should speak to the churchwardens telling them what you would like the group to do. |
